I am often asked about downtime of cosmetic surgery procedures. Last week, I was asked about the recovery time for a tummy tuck. After 3 children, this patient wanted a flat tummy for her wedding anniversary vacation this June.
My answer was to achieve a flat tummy for summer with little to no evidence of scarring, surgery in February and March will provide you with the optimal recovery period. I typically tell patients that tummy tuck surgery involves 2 weeks of true downtime and 6 weeks of an abdominal binder to protect the muscle repair. The scars will continue to improve over 6 months, but are often very acceptable by 2 months. Therefore, most my patients are comfortable in their bikini's and mid drift tops at this time.
